My craft room was a certified disaster zone. We’re talking ribbon rolls stacked like a jenga tower ready to topple, fabric scraps that seemed to multiply overnight, and a sea of craft supplies that could rival a small Michaels store. If there was a world record for “Most Time Wasted Searching for Glue Sticks,” I was definitely in the running.
The lack of storage? A total nightmare. Finding a specific item in that mess was like playing hide-and-seek. Unfinished projects were buried under mountains of supplies, and I couldn’t tell you how many times I bought the same item twice because I couldn’t find the original.
Walking into that room didn’t spark joy, it sparked panic. My tools were scattered across different surfaces, like they’d had a wild party the night before and passed out wherever they landed. And forget about having a clear workspace — every available inch was cluttered with half-done projects, rogue buttons, and a rainbow of mesh scraps.
Basically, my craft room was less of a creative sanctuary and more of a cautionary tale. It was time for a serious intervention, because if I didn’t get this mess under control, I was going to end up on one of those reality shows about hoarders. The transformation needed to happen, not just for the sake of my crafts, but for everyone's sanity.
So, the first step in tackling my craft room chaos was to roll up my sleeves and dive into the deep end of sorting and decluttering. I knew I had to Marie Kondo the heck out of that place — if it didn’t spark joy, it had to go!
I started by pulling everything out. Yes, that’s right — every last scrap of mesh, every spool of ribbon, and every glitter-covered bauble. My floor was covered in a craft explosion that could’ve doubled as modern art. But I was on a mission: I was going to tame this crafty beast, one glue stick at a time.
First, I created three piles: Keep, Donate, and Discard. The Keep pile was for items I actually used — like my favorite scissors that I have to hide from the rest of the family. The Donate pile was for those craft supplies that hadn’t seen the light of day since I bought them on a whim. And the Discard pile? Well, let’s just say it was a trip down memory lane, filled with dried-up glue bottles and half-empty glitter tubes that should’ve been tossed years ago.
As I sorted, I found it helpful to categorize everything by type, color, and frequency of use. For instance, I grouped all my fabric by color, so I could finally see at a glance whether I had that perfect shade of pink (spoiler: I had five). Tools I use all the time, like my trusty glue gun, got prime real estate, while seasonal supplies were banished to the back of the closet, where they belong—until I suddenly need them, of course.
A major tip? Bins and baskets are your best friends. I labeled everything like a mom on the first day of school. Now, when I’m in the crafting zone, I can actually find what I need without tearing the room apart. And let me tell you, that’s a victory in itself
So, with everything sorted and decluttered, I could finally breathe again. My craft room was starting to resemble a functional space rather than a disaster area. Next up: figuring out how to store everything in a way that wouldn’t lead to another craft avalanche.
When it came to organizing my craft room, picking the right storage solutions was like finding the perfect pair of jeans — functional, cute, and something that wouldn’t drive me crazy after a week. I needed storage that fit both my space and my crafting style, because let’s face it, I didn’t want to spend half my crafting time searching for that one elusive ribbon or trying to untangle a mess of floral stems.
After much Pinterest scrolling and a few too many trips to the store, I landed on a combination of shelves, bins, and racks. But the pièce de résistance of my craft room makeover was the custom-built storage rack for my ever-growing collection of silk flowers. Click here to learn how I built my DIY Faux Flower Organizer
I knew that planning the layout would be crucial to maximizing both space and functionality. After all, what's the point of having all your supplies organized if you can't reach them when creativity strikes?
I took a long, hard look at the room and realized it needed a serious overhaul. The furniture wasn’t in the best spots for how I like to work, and there was a lot of underutilized space just begging to be put to better use. So, I rolled up my sleeves, channeled my inner HGTV star, and started moving things around.
To maximize functionality, I made sure that all my most-used items were within arm’s reach. Things like glue guns, scissors, and zip ties got prime real estate on the table or on the nearby shelves. The less frequently used items were stored higher up or further back, so they didn’t clutter up my immediate workspace.
A few tips if you’re planning your own craft room layout:
Go Vertical: Use your wall space! Shelves, pegboards, and wall-mounted bins can keep your supplies accessible without eating up precious floor space.
Create Zones: Think about how you work and group items accordingly. Keep your sewing supplies together, your painting gear in one spot, etc. This way, you’re not zig-zagging across the room mid-project.
Adjust as Needed: Don’t be afraid to tweak your setup as you go. You might find that something that seemed like a good idea on paper doesn’t work as well in practice. It’s all part of the process!
Here are some words to live by: declutter or die. Okay, maybe not die, but your sanity might. Schedule regular "purge parties" – invite a friend for moral support (and maybe a glass of wine) and ruthlessly eliminate the craft clutter. Remember, hoarding supplies doesn't make you a better crafter; it makes you a packrat.
For every new sparkly thing that enters your craft room, something old has to go. It's the circle of craft life. This rule might seem harsh, but trust us, your future self will thank you.
We all have those moments of "I'll put it away later" delusion. Spoiler alert: later never comes. Train yourself to be a craft room ninja and put things back immediately. Your future self will be eternally grateful.
Sometimes the mess is part of the creative process. But don't let it become a permanent resident. A clean slate is always refreshing, so don't be afraid to start over when needed.
